Evolving Colors in User Interfaces by Interactive Genetic Algorithm

Proceedings of World Congress on Nature and Biologically Inspired Computing - NaBIC'09, IEEE, Coimbatore, India 9-11 Dicembre 2009 (to appear)

Abstract. Color selection in designing user interfaces is addressed by an Interactive Genetic Algorithm. The proposed approach is aimed at finding the optimal trade-off between different and sometimes conflicting constraints, without any explicit model of user preferences and abilities. Experimentation investigates the algorithm convergence under several conditions and user behavior

An Application of Bayesian Networks in Predicting Form Entries

Proceedings of World Congress on Nature and Biologically Inspired Computing - NaBIC'09, IEEE, Coimbatore, India, 9-11 Dicembre 2009 (to appear)

Abstract. In this paper we propose a model, based on Bayesian Inference, aimed at predicting the user input according to past interactions. We exploited this approach to prototype an innovative online payment system in Poste Italiane. Preliminary experimental results outline that this approach is feasible and may improve usability and user experience more in general.

A Fast Algorithm for Mining Rare Itemsets

Proceedings of 9th International Conference on Intelligent Systems Design and Applications – ISDA 09, IEEE, Pisa, Italia, 30 Novembre – 2 Dicembre 2009 (to appear)

Abstract. Mining patterns in large databases is a challenging task facing NP-hard problems. Research focused attention on the most occurrent patterns, although less frequent patterns still offer interesting insights. In this paper we propose a new algorithm for discovering infrequent patterns and compare it to other solutions

A Preliminary Experience in Optimizing the Layout of Web Pages by Genetic Algorithms to Fit Mobile Devices

Proceedings of 9th International Conference on Intelligent Systems Design and Applications – ISDA 09, IEEE, Pisa, Italia, 30 Novembre – 2 Dicembre 2009 (to appear)

Abstract. Getting access to web content by mobile devices is becoming widespread. This poses the need of adapting content that have been designed for desktop application to being delivered on smaller displays. In this paper we investigate the application of a genetic algorithm as means for an automatic adaptation of existent pages to mobile device requirements, reporting preliminary results and outlining problems to be faced and solved in order to make this approach robust.

Web Form Page in Mobile Device: Optimization of Layout with a Simple Genetic Algorithm

Proceedings of 11th International Conference on Enterprise Information Systems, ICEIS 2009

Abstract. Filling out a form on mobile devices is generally harder than on other terminals, due to the reduced keyboard and display size, entailing a higher fatigue and limiting the user experience. A solution to this problem can be based on reducing the input effort required to the user by auto-completion, and re-organizing the fields in order to provide first those with a higher prediction power. In this paper we assume to be able to predict the user input and we optimize the fields layout aiming at reducing on average the input actions.

Interactive Genetic Algorithm for choosing suitable colors in User Interface

Learning and Intelligent OptimizatioN, LION3, Trento, Italy, 14-18 Gennaio 2009.

Abstract. Designing accessible interfaces does not necessarily mean making them boring, and abandoning an original color scheme. In this paper we present an approach that explores the color palette space, searching for a solution that represents a good compromise between aesthetics and accessibility requirements. This search is performed by using an interactive genetic algorithm which takes into account two different factors made by objective evaluation depending on color distances and contrast ratios and subjective one depending on the score given by user.

Adapting Palettes to Color Vision Deficiencies by Genetic Algorithm

Proceedings of Genetic and Evolutionary Computation Conference - GECCO 2008
Atlanta, USA, 12-16 Luglio 2008.

Abstract. In choosing a color palette, it is necessary to take into the account the needs of color vision impaired users, in order to make information and services accessible to a broader audience. This means to search the space of color palettes aimed to find a color combination representing a good trade-off between aesthetics and accessibility requirements. In this paper, we present a solution based on genetic algorithms. Experimental results highlight this approach to be an efficient but effective way to assist UI designers by suggesting appropriate variations of color palettes.

Generative UI design in SAPI Project

Proceedings of 26th Conference on Computer Human Interaction 2008 - CHI 2008
Florence, Italy, 5-10 April 2008.

Abstract. In this paper we provide an overview of the SAPI project, an initiative of Poste Italiane in collaboration with RCOST-University of Sannio, ITSLab and CRIAI, supported by MIUR, Italian Ministry of University and Research. The project is aimed at developing a software platform, that implementing a novel approach to the user interface generation centered on search based techniques, will provide automatic and semiautomatic adaptation of user interface to vision impaired people.

Optimization of menu layout by means of genetic algorithms

Proceedings of Eighth European Conference on Evolutionary Computation in Combinatorial Optimisation - EvoCOP 2008 - Naples, Italy, LNCS 4972, 26-28 March 2008, pages: 242–253.

Abstract. Menu systems are key components in modern graphical user interfaces (GUIs), either for traditional desktop applications, or for the latest web applications. The design of interface layout must consider different aspects resulting in a trade-off between often conflicting requirements. This trade-off is aimed at making effective use of interfaces in order to meet user preferences and to conform to standard guidelines at the same time. Assuming we are able to quantify such a trade-off, the problem of finding a menu system able to maximize it figures as a combinatorial optimization problem. In this paper we investigate the application of genetic algorithms as a viable approach to identifying solutions that can be used as a starting point for further fine-tuning.
